Hair loss
As men get older, they can often begin to lose their hair. The effect of this can not only lower their confidence, but can have a major impact on their everyday life.
What causes hair loss?
Hair loss is caused by a sensitive reaction to a type of testosterone. This causes hair follicles to shrink and, as a result, they lose the ability to grow and restore ‘new’ hair.
Hair loss can be made worse by lifestyle, with stress, poor diet or illness speeding up the process. Unfortunately, however, it is often linked to family genetics and so, if your father or grandfather lost their hair at a relatively early age, then it is likely that the same thing will happen to you.
When does hair loss start?
Since hair loss is a testosterone-based condition (ie, it’s linked to your hormones), it can effectively begin any time after puberty.
For some men, the hair-loss process can start as early as their 20s, but most men will experience some degree of hair loss by the time they reach the age of 60.
How does it happen?
Hair loss generally follows a pattern. In most men it usually begins with a receding hairline and thinning hair on the crown.
(You should note that hair loss does not involve large clumps of hair falling out, leaving patches, and so if you are experiencing this type of hair loss, then you should speak to your GP.)
Can you stop hair loss?
Unfortunately, there is at present no ‘cure’ for male hair loss, but there are some treatments that can prevent further hair loss and - in some cases - lead to renewed hair growth.
The two most well-known, effective treatments available in the UK are finasteride and minoxidil.
Finasteride – which is available on prescription – is taken every day for a minimum of 3 months before results are noticed, but it has already been proven to be very effective, with 90% of men having positive results.
Regaine Extra Strength For Men is an over-the-counter treatment which doesn’t require a prescription. Available as a lotion, foam or liquid, it must be applied to the scalp at least once a day, every day, to have a positive effect on hair loss.
