Period delay service
Perhaps you have a special event such as a wedding or a holiday coming up and you wish to delay your period. As part of the Women’s Health Clinic at Toome Pharmacy we offer a period delay service.
Our pharmacists are fully trained to consult with you and prescribe a prescription-only pill, which can be used to delay your period by up to 14 days. This is within the convenience of the pharmacy without waiting for an appointment with your GP.
Norethisterone contains the hormone progesterone. This hormone ensures that your natural progesterone levels remain at their usual level and so stops the lining of your womb from shedding, ie, delaying your period. This medicine does not provide protection against pregnancy and is not suitable for women on certain medications or for those with asthma or migraines.
If you opt for Norethisterone, then you take it three days before your period is due and then can continue to take it for a maximum of 17 days (14 days plus 3 days prior to onset) . Your period will return 2 or 3 days after you stop taking it.
Norethisterone isn’t safe for some women to take, however, and so that’s why it’s important that you provide our pharmacist with full information about your monthly cycle etc, and about any personal or family history of thrombosis.
While Norethisterone is safe for most women to use on an occasional basis, it should not be taken regularly.
If you have a big event, a business trip or a holiday, call into the pharmacy and speak to our pharmacists about delaying your period.
